SCENE II. Lucius Malfoy's garden

Enter HARRY

HARRY

I'm an idiot to think that I'll find him

I must have dodged five guards already.

But I must find him. I must follow my heart.

Now which is his window?

DRACO appears above at a window. HARRY speaks to himself.

But, ho! There's light through yonder window?

It is the east, and Draco is the sun.

Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,

But he looks already sick and pale with grief,

He must know the truth... more woe to me

And I was a fool to wear my love on my sleeve.

He is my love, O, he is my heart!

O, that he knows my pursuit of him!

But he speaks yet says nothing: what of that?

His eyes show his distress; I will answer it.

I am too bold, 'tis not to me he speaks:

His eyes are the fairest stars in all the heaven,

And twinkle in their spheres till they return.

The brightness of his hair would shame those stars,

As daylight doth a lamp; his eyes in heaven

Would through the airy region stream so bright

That birds would sing and think it were not night.

Oh... I am hooked. He is beautiful! An Adonis!

I care not that he is a muggle,

Nor that our fathers hate each other.

Love conquers all.

I know that with all my soul.

O, that if I were up there with him,

That I might touch that gorgeous hair!

DRACO

Ay me!

HARRY

[Aside] He speaks:

O, speak again, bright angel! for thou art,

Worth tempting death to even see you!

DRACO

O Harry, Harry! why art thou a Potter?

Will you deny thy father and refuse thy magic;

If thou wilt not, be that you are my sworn love,

then I'll no longer be a Malfoy.

HARRY

[Aside] Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

DRACO

'Tis but thy name that is my enemy, a wizard;

Thou art not just any wizard, but a Potter.

Why Potter? O, be some other name!

But what's important in a name?

If we call a rose by any other name,

It would smell as sweet and look beautiful,

So Harry would, were he not be a Potter,

Would retain that dear perfection of confidence,

Which he projects so well

But without that title, he would be fault,

Harry, if thou doff thy name,

Though that name which is no part of thee,

I'll take you all for myself.

HARRY

I take thee at thy word:

Call me, love, and I'll be new baptized;

Henceforth I never will be Potter, or a wizard,

If that be your will, Draco.

I will take any name that you wish.

DRACO

What? art thou a villain stalking in my garden,

Screened by night and spy on me?

You have stumblest onto my musings.

HARRY

But I heard thy exclamation.

My apologies... I couldn't wait until tomorrow.

It is a only name, Draco. Just like yours.

I know not how to tell thee who I am:

But my name, I hate it now,

Because it is an enemy to thee;

Had I the chance, I would renounce it!

DRACO

I'm not that drunk to imagine this,

Art thou not a Potter and a wizard?

HARRY

Neither, fair angel, if either thee dislikes.

DRACO

How the hell did thou get in here anyway?

The garden walls are high and hard to climb,

We have magic detectors! But Harry...

If any of my guards find thee here,

Considering who thou art, they will kill you!

HARRY

With love's wings did I scale these walls;

For stony limits cannot hold love out,

Nor guards, magic disruptors or guns,

And true love can do anything, Draco;

Therefore thy guards are no threat to me.

DRACO

If they do see thee, they will murder thee.

HARRY

Alas, there's more peril in what thou will say,

Than twenty of their guns!

DRACO

I would not for the world want them to see thee here.

HARRY

I have a magic cloak to hide me from their sight;

But by my word, let them find me here:

My life were better ended now,

Rather than a prolonged death, without thy love.

DRACO

Who helped you find my window?

HARRY

Love did, who it first did prompt me to search you;

I followed my heart and it led me here!

DRACO

Good thing it is night or I might be blushing

But for that what thou hast heard me speak tonight

Fain, would I deny it, if I were pressed truly.

What I have spoken: but musings of my soul!

Dost thou love me? I know thou wilt say 'Ay,'

And I will take thy word: yet if thou swear'st,

I have no way to know to hold thou to it,

O hero, if thou dost love, pronounce it faithfully:

Or if thou think'st I am too quickly won,

I'll be hurt if thou is playing false,

But trust me, hero, I'll prove my words true

I should have guarded my thoughts, I must confess,

But that thou overheard'st, ere I was unaware,

My own passion, so therefore pardon me,

And not continue this reckless foley,

Which the dark night hath so discovered.

HARRY

My love, by yonder blessed moon I swear

That tips with silver all these fruit-tree tops--

DRACO

O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon,

That monthly changes in her circled orb,

Lest that thy love prove likewise so variable.

HARRY

What shall I swear by?

DRACO

Do not swear at all, wizard

Or, if thou wilt, swear by thy magic,

Which is a mystery to me, but is profound to you,

And I'll believe thee.

HARRY

If thou needs to hear the words,

I swear that I love--

DRACO

No, do not swear, Harry,

I have no joy of these promises tonight:

Made in dark of the night, absent your touch,

It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden;

Too like the lightning, which doth cease to be,

Before one can say 'It lightens.'

Sweet love, good night! Let rest bring reason,

Then find me tomorrow, if thy heart is with me.

Goodnight, my hero....

HARRY

O, wilt thou leave me so unsatisfied?

DRACO

What satisfaction canst thou have tonight?

HARRY

The exchange of thy love's faithful vow for mine.

DRACO

I gave thee mine before thou spoke,

In all but the exact words.

And do I need to give it again?

HARRY

Wouldst thou withdraw it? for what purpose, love?

DRACO

No, I give it thee again

And yet I wish but for the thing I have:

My love is as deep as the water in oceans;

And the more I give to thee,

The more I have, for both are infinite.

BLAISE calls within

I hear my mate within; dear love, adieu!

Coming Blaise! Sweet wizard, be true.

Stay but a little, I will come again.

Hide, lest he catches you

Exit

HARRY

O blessed, blessed night! I am afeard that

Being in night, all this is but a dream.

Re-enter DRACO

DRACO

Three words, dear Harry: good night love.

If that thy bent of love be honourable,

Find me tomorrow, wizard, and we can talk,

In the same room, without an audience.

I'm not sure of thy purpose of this courting,

But 'ere send me word tomorrow,

Where and what time thou wants;

And I'll lay all my fortunes at thy foot, Harry,

For surely I'll be disowned by my father.

But this is not the place to discuss this.

BLAISE

[Within] Draco! What are you doing

DRACO

I'm coming!

But if thou mean'st not well,

I do beseech thee--

BLAISE

[Within] Dray!

DRACO

Damn it, I'm coming!

You should walk away now,

And leave me to my grief.

I'm not meant to find happiness.

HARRY

Never. Goodnight, my soul.

DRACO

A thousand times good night!

Exit.

HARRY

A thousand times the worse wait,

I want thy light, every day and night

Re-enter DRACO.

DRACO

Hey! Harry, my hero!

HARRY

My soul soars as thou calls my name

DRACO

At what time will you send a message?

HARRY

By the hour of nine.

DRACO

I don't fail me: 'tis twenty years till then.

HARRY

Aye. I'm not sure how I'll manage.

DRACO

'Tis almost morning; I would have thee gone:

I don't need my love to get caught.

HARRY

I would be invisible to all but you

DRACO

Sweet, so would I:

Yet I should kill thee with much cherishing.

If you let yourself get caught,

Good night, good night!

Parting is such sweet sorrow,

That I shall say good night till it be tomorrow.

Exit.

HARRY

Sleep dwell upon thine eyes, peace in thy heart!

Would I were sleep and peace, so sweet to rest!

Hence will I to my good friend's cell,

His help I crave, and much to tell.

Exit
