SCENE III. A room in Lucius Malfoy's house, #10 Downing Street.
Enter NARCISSA MALFOY and BLAISE
NARCISSA MALFOY
Blaise, where's my son? Shouldn't you be with him?
Are not you his bodyguard?
BLAISE
Now, ma'am, your son is seventeen years old,
I bade him to stay. But he was so mad that he left!
I'm sorry! Perhaps he returned? Draco!
Enter DRACO
DRACO
How now! Who calls?
BLAISE
Your mother.
DRACO
Madam, I am here.
What is your will?
NARCISSA MALFOY
This is the matter, Blaise, give us a second,
We must talk in secret! Wait! Blaise, come back again!
I have remember'd that thou's hear our counsel.
Thou know' st my son since you were boys.
BLAISE
Yes, ma'am and friends all the while.
NARCISSA MALFOY
He's not eighteen. You are both boys still.
BLAISE
I'm am older however
NARCISSA MALFOY
A few fortnights and odd days.
BLAISE
Even or odd, of all days in the year,
I'm still older, nay I should live a thousand years,
I never should forget it: I am older;
And, Draco, the pretty fool, will sulk and said, 'Ay.'
NARCISSA MALFOY
Enough of this; I pray thee, hold thy peace.
BLAISE
Yes, madam: yet I cannot choose but laugh,
To think he should leave crying and say 'Ay.'
My mother, a widow of all these years;
Let me serve your house as a page and servant:
And now to my delight, I serve your son,
who's closer to me than any, but I am of age,
And am therefore older, when thou comest to age;
Wilt thou not sulk and said 'Ay. You are older.'
DRACO
And sulk thou too, I pray thee, Blaise, shut up!
BLAISE
Peace, I am done. But say, older or not,
Thou wast the best man that e'er I know:
And I might live to see thee married, to a fair one.
I have my wish, my brother. I wish to see you happy.
NARCISSA MALFOY
Marry, that 'marry' is the very theme
I came to talk of. Tell me, my son,
How stands your disposition to be married?
DRACO
It is an honour that I dream not of. I'm seventeen.
BLAISE
An honour, hah! I'm glad I'm not you, mate,
I would say thou hadst been suck'd into hell.
NARCISSA MALFOY
Well, think of marriage now, both of you;
Here in London, sons and daughters do as their parents say,
Arranged marriages are still done: several by my count,
I was your mother much upon these years
That you are now a man. Thus I'll be brief:
The glorious Pansy seeks you for her love.
BLAISE
A duchess, Draco! Mate, such a lady
In school--why, she's the one everyone wanted.
NARCISSA MALFOY
London hath not such a better flower. This is wonderful!
BLAISE
Nay, she's a flower; in faith, a very pricky flower.
NARCISSA MALFOY
What say you? Can you love her beauty?
This night you shall behold her at our party for the war effort;
Read o'er the sweetest of young Pansy's face,
And find delight as she is royalty, Draco! A Duchess;
My grandchildren could be in line for the throne,
And see how both know each other! Consent must be given,
Ere you provoke your father's wraith. Rebuff her,
And we'll lose everything. So, look upon her in favor
Find written in the gleam of her eyes, unbound love,
So, shall you share all that she doth possess,
By having her, making yourself greater than your father.
BLAISE
A title, Draco! Nay, bigger than your lord father; A duke!
NARCISSA MALFOY
Speak briefly, can you like Pansy's love and offer?
DRACO
I'll look to like if looking liking move:
But no more deep will I say to my hearts goals
But your will gives strength to make me love her.
Enter THEODORE NOTT
THEODORE NOTT
Madam, the guests are bid come, supper served in a few hours,
My lord husband asked for you and Blaise to come.
The pantry and everything must be seen to.
I must beseech you to follow me straight there.
NARCISSA MALFOY
We follow thee. Go Draco and find your betrothed tonight
Blaise, give conference and follow us shortly.
Exit THEODORE NOTT and NARCISSA MALFOY
BLAISE
I can only bid you seek happy nights to happy days.
DRACO
I do not like Pansy, nor her title, Blaise.
How can I find love? I can't even find a like!
BLAISE
I'm sorry for you, mate. I really am.
I would say thou must do as thy lord father decrees.
He is not a man to ignore and with this war!
DRACO
This war is stupid, Blaise! I stormed out early today,
Due to my aunt shooting up the town!
They are rebuilding, Blaise. They aren't terrible.
BLAISE
You defy your father's edict and you lose all.
This is no game to play, Draco. Many are dead.
Do as thou are told or prepare to lose your family.
DRACO
I will ponder thy words, go to my mother, Blaise.
BLAISE
I serve your father and mother, Draco,
But always remember, I swore to serve you first.
DRACO
Thank you, you've always been my one true friend.
BLAISE
My brother. If thou chooses exile, I will join thee.
I am not afraid. I will help you if you need me.
Exit BLAISE, and DRACO walks outside and down the street.
DRACO
Marry, forced to marry at seventeen! The indignity!
What of love? Of living in the present?
I hath not even seen the world, yet, to marry.
But the thing must wrong... I know that I'll ne'er love Pansy
Nor any woman. I've kept my secret and the shame of it,
No one knows, not even Blaise, thou I know he'll support me.
Marry to Pansy and her title. Duty and family honor will make me
I will suffer forever from it. I hath never touched another
I'll be forced to touch only her, to dance and sing to royal court
It sickens me, but what can I do? Lose my family?
Draco kicks a rubbish bin and cries. Enter HARRY.
HARRY
Oy, mate? Are you alright?
You look a little upset? Need an ear?
DRACO
Thank sir, I'm just accepting that I am screwed.
You need not darken your day by talking to me.
HARRY
I'm sure it can't be that bad. It's a dark day for me too?
Can I at least help you in making it better
A pint? Or else beat up someone for you
You are beautiful enough to take on the Prince for.
DRACO
Are you flirting with me, sir?
HARRY
Perhaps. I've never seen the sun so reflected in hair before,
Nor that tint of grey in your granite eyes,
My apologies. I know that being queer is legal now
But I don't wish to offend thee.
DRACO
Offended, I am not. But I can't entertain my feelings,
I'm trapped, bound. Between this war and my father's orders
I'll be forced to marry against my will, to a girl nonetheless.
HARRY
What, are we living in the days of Victoria? Ordered marriage!
No, you poor soul! I'd die if my father choose such a path for me
Please let me help you! I can help you escape!
DRACO
I'll never be free of my gilded cage, hero,
I'm afraid you will have to find someone else to save,
The war has only strengthened my father's will!
HARRY
Do... do you hate wizards and witches, then?
[Aside] Oh, merlin, please, I beg you, say no.
DRACO
I cannot hate what I know not, muggle or magician
I know I hate hate and hate death more.
Since the Great Reveal, it has only grown darker
I blame the wizards and witches not. We gained much.
The owl post office, healing beyond our imagination,
And Apparation of goods... we can go far together,
But we can't. Neither side will budge and share our country.
I take it that you are a wizard then?
HARRY
As I understand that you are a muggle.
But that matters not... my mother was a muggleborn
I was raised one. I share no ill will for you or any muggle
Please don't that let deter you! Yours is real soul... and fair.
Please give me a chance. I'll not disappoint you.
DRACO
But I'll disappoint you, wizard. We can't do this,
If my father found out, no. I'm sorry. I must go.
I'm resigned to my loveless fate. Farewell, my hero.
Exit Draco before HARRY can stop him.
HARRY
Oy me! To find my true love... but he denies me,
But to hear of his father's evil plans! I will find you
Muggle or not, I will free you. We belong together.
Fate has brought us together; I know it now.
And I have been screwed over by her too many times
She owes me this, but first, I must stop my mates,
War will break out if they accomplish their task.
Exeunt
