"Alright then. Any questions?" I was standing in front of my class and I had just finished - and nailed - my presentation for my hi온라인카지노게임 project about laws. For the creative bit I had searched crazy laws people used to have and I made up some of my own and let the rest of my class guess which ones were real.
A few laws had earned me some chuckles, needless to say I had rocked this project. The teacher seemed happy with it too. I wouldn't get my grade until everyone had finished their presentations so it could take a few weeks.
"Yeah. Why did you choose this subject since you're, like, always the one breaking the laws anyway?" Some random girl asked. I didn't remember her name but I knew she was one of Tasha's minions. She was probably enjoying this moment so much and already imagining the pat on the back she'd get from her queen bee.
I felt sorry for the girl.
Well, no, not really.
I could see the teacher opening his mouth to intervene but I beat him to the punch.
"You can't break laws if you don't even know them, silly girl." Not that I was a delinquent or anything. That's just what my school thinks. They think I stay out of juvie because daddy's a lawyer. Right. He'd throw me in there himself if I'd do something stupid. They'd obviously never met my dad.
"So you admit you break laws, like, all of the time?" The girl said while twirling her hair. Yes. She was actually twirling her hair.
"No, I'm just stating the obvious. I figured someone had to spell it out for you." Did she really think she'd get some confession from me? My intelligence took a blow there.
The girl looked confused. I had to bite my lip in order to keep my face neutral. What the hell was she doing in AP Hi온라인카지노게임? Did she get lost on her way to her actual class and just settled for the first classroom she encountered? Or was she just playing dumb?
"I don't get it." She said. Well, at least she had the balls to admit this conversation was way beyond her comprehension.
"My point exactly." I said. A few people tried to hide their laughs. Of course it was forbidden to laugh at a queen bee minion. They were all going to hell. Social hell, that is.
"That's enough Winny and Jill." So that was her name. The teacher didn't sound angry or anything. Heck, I'd go out on a limb and say he looked amused.
"Are there other questions for Jill?" Oh, right. I was technically still doing my presention. Nobody said anything so I took a seat.
Well, that was fun.
I wasn't one of those people that dreaded doing presentations. I didn't get nervous or anything because it was just a high school presentation. I was biased though. I'd heard my mom practice her presentations for Harvard and the congress a few times so a little hi온라인카지노게임 presentation didn't seem so important.
After me it was Matthew's turn. It was tough seeing that. He was extremely nervous and he struggled speaking coherent sentences.
Luckily he was the last one and after that school was over. My mom had told me she didn't have to work too late tonight so we could catch up.
She'd been home for a few days now but work was still busy. I figured she'd get a little more time off since her presentation was over but apparently those people were impressed by the results and she's now leading the longitudinal study.
Basically she got more funding so now they were gonna research the long term effects of her study, hence making it longitudinal.
We hadn't had the opportunity to properly catch up with each other because of that.
Jake was waiting at my car when I was able to escape the busy hallways.
"Jilly! You look so pretty today." Jake shot me a huge grin.
"What do you want?" I deadpanned. Jake would compliment people for two reasons and since he wasn't hitting on me I was guessing he needed something.
"I need a huge favor. I was supposed to watch Emma today but something at work came up and I have to go."
Jake had the coolest job ever. He worked with a vet. He got the job a year ago because the vet was his mom's friend and she needed someone to take care of the animals. Sometimes she'd call Jake out of the blue telling him to get his butt over there because she needed to perform an operation and she needed extra help with pet care.
Awesome job, right?
I didn't really have a job. During the summer and sometimes during the weekends I'd be a secretary for my dad's law firm. Boring as fuck.
You'd think it'd be interesting because a lot of men work there. Unfortunately they're all old. Although last summer there was this intern and he was cute. We'd flirt every once in a while but I think dad scared him off. It was really funny though.
I did miss John. He was my dad's colleague and he always told me a lot of weird stories about his clients. Sometimes he'd come up to my desk and shout 'I lawyered the shit out of court today!' and then proceeded to tell me an exaggerated version of what went down.
John and the intern made it bearable working there.
"And you want me to watch Emma today?" I asked Jake.
"Please Jill. I'll owe you big time!" Jake seemed pretty desperate. I didn't mind though, Emma was a cool kid. She was nine years old and she had dark hair and eyes, just like her brother. She was gonna break a lot of hearts when she got older. She already got Jake wrapped around her little finger.
"No problem Jake, but you owe me a bike ride." I smiled when Jake engulfed me in a hug. The guy was very relieved.
"Okay, you need to pick her up from school and then drive to my place. I'll be back in a few hours, here's my key." Jake handed me his key urgently. He was talking quite fast so I figured he really needed to go.
"Wait, does Emma know I'm picking her up?" I hadn't seen the kid in a few months and I didn't feel like being accused of kidnapping.
"No, just wait with the other moms. Don't worry, she'll recognise you. She asks about you all the time. Anyway I really need to go. Thanks Jill, bye!" Jake was already heading the other direction before I could say something back.
I guess that left me no choice.
I quickly shot my mom a text so she'd know what I was doing and then I started driving towards the elementary school.
The kids were already leaving the building when I got there and I went over to the other moms. A few looked at me as if I was waiting for my own kid. Yeah, no thanks.
"Jilly! Is Jake here too?" I noticed the little girl immediately and was kinda relieved she had recognised me.
"Nope, it's just you and me for a few hours. Is that okay?" I took her little backpack in one hand and grabbed her hand.
I guess it was okay since she was jumping up and down. Aren't kids supposed to be tired after school? I know I was.
"How was school?" I asked Emma.
"Fun! We had math and we learned how to make birthday cards." Ah, I remembered when I said school was fun. It was a very long time ago.
"Really? That's so cool. Too bad my birthday was a few weeks ago." I pouted and opened my car door for her so she could hop in.
"I can still make you a card Jill." She gave me a sweet smile. Damn, this was probably the easiest kid ever to get along with.
I took a seat next to her. "Thanks Emma. Seatbelt?" I looked her over.
"Seatbelt!" She answered.
It was a short ride to Jake's place and Emma talked the whole way through.
The first thing I did was marching to the kitchen. I was hungry and so was Emma. After our cookies she told me she didn't have homework. Yeah, right. I knew that trick.
I checked it myself and was surprised to see she actually didn't have any homework. Lucky kid.
"I'm gonna make you a birthday card now." She grabbed a piece of paper and crayons and that was that. Well, this was boring. I just watched some TV and checked on Emma every once in a while.
"Jill, do you know the colors of the rainbow?" Emma asked suddenly.
"Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain." I said without looking at her. When I didn't get a response I went over to the table she was sitting at.
"Those aren't colors Jilly!" She giggled. So she didn't know that phrase to remember the colors.
"That's how you remember. Just think about the first letter of each word. So it's red orange yellow green blue indigo violet. Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain." I explained to her. What did they teach these kids anyway?
"Ohhh. What if you can't remember that phrase?" She did have a point there. It wasn't really an easy sentence to remember, especially as a kid.
"Okay, let's make our own phrase then." I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote R O Y G B I V down vertically.
"Royal Oysters Yield Greasy Big Invested Vampires!" That wasn't my best. Emma giggled.
"Really Old Yogurt Grows Bad In Vanilla?" These sentences didn't make sense whatsoever.
"I like that one" Emma smiled and she gave me a high five which is a big honor if you get one from a nine year old.
"Alright. Let's test it. Emma, give me the colors of the rainbow." I said in a fake serious way.
"Really Old Yogurt Grow Bad In Vanilla. Red orange yellow green blue indigooo.... Violet?" She got a little lost at the end but nailed it anyway.
"Great!" Emma beamed.
"I'm done! Happy late birthday." She handed me the card.
She told me it was a drawing of me, her and Jake with a rainbow. Best birthday card ever.
"Thanks!" I gave her a big hug. "So what do we do now?" I asked her. We still had more than an hour to kill.
"I don't know, the iPad needs to charge." Damn, that's sad. She just played the iPad when it was such a beautiful day outside? It wasn't hot or anything but the sun was shining and that should be enough.
"We should hopscotch!" I shouted enthusiastically and Emma joined in.
"I'll show you where the sidewalk chalk is." Emma grabbed my hand and guided me to the cupboard of awesomeness. There was chalk and water balloons and even stuff to blow bubbles. Like I said, cupboard of awesomeness.
"We should draw 100 squares!" Let's not. We'd never get to the hopscotch part that way and let's face it, that was the best part.
"Let's start with 20 Emma." We didn't really draw a lot of squares, more like hearts and stars and moon and even Jake's face. And by Jake's face, I mean a pig's face. Not my idea, might I add. Emma was an evil genius for her age.
"Let's end it with a rainbow!" I got the feeling Emma liked rainbows.
"Sure! What's the sentence again?" I grabbed a pink chalk since we didn't have red.
"You already forgot? It's Really Old Yogurt Grows Bad In Vanilla." I swear if she were a few years older she would've rolled her eyes at me.
When we finished I got up and looked at our art. It really was awesome and the rainbow was the perfect finish.
"Alright, time to find the best rock ever so we can throw them."
I forgot how much fun hopscotch was. We were still playing when Jake pulled in the driveway. You know that heartwarming moment where the kid drops everything to leap in the arms of the adult?
Didn't happen.
Emma pretty much ignored Jake because she was so focused on the hopscotch. Needless to say I did a great job with the kid today.
"What? No hugs?" Jake pouted and stretched his arms.
Emma giggled. "Jill should give you a hug."
That was mean. I entertained her like a boss and she just threw me under the bus. I walked over to Jake and give him a hug. Emma soon followed.
"Thanks Jilly." Jake said gratefully.
"Next time ask your girlfriend." I winked. Luckily Emma didn't hear, she was cleaning up the chalk. She wouldn't have understood the sarcasm.
"I don't have one." He muttered. So he hadn't made his move yet. Damn, he sure took his time with that.
"Tessa might lose her patience." I smirked. He looked surprised.
"Wait. You know I like Tessa?" He asked. Oh come on. I'm not that stupid.
"You underestimate me Jakey" I smiled at his discomfort. At least he admit it. Well, kinda.
"I'm working on it okay" He said eventually. "How did you-" I figured he wanted to ask me how I knew he liked her but Emma interrupted us. We'd talk about this later.
"I'm heading home kid. Don't eat old yogurt." She giggled. Yeah, that's right. I had inside jokes with a nine year old and I felt pretty cool about that.
"That's weird advice Jill" Jake laughed. That made Emma giggle even more.
"Bye Jilly!" Emma gave me a hug. It's cute that she called me Jilly. She'd heard Jake call me that once and ever since she'd been calling me the same.
"Bye Emma! Keep an eye on that brother of yours." I winked at Jake. He smirked in reply.

"How was babysitting?" Was the first thing my mom said when I got home. Not a nice 'hello my sweet daughter, how've you been?' nope, she got down to business.
"It was fun. I played hopscotch." I grinned like a little kid. I still needed to switch to adult-talk.
"Looks like you enjoyed it more than the girl." My mom teased. So what if I did?
"Ooh and look!" I handed her the birthday card Emma had made for me. My mom smiled and shook her head.
"Here, I baked cookies." She gave ma a plate with chocolate chip cookies. Yum.
Wait.
Oh God.
Something was wrong.
"Mom? Tell me what's going on." I started eating the cookies. They were delicious.
"Nothing really, I was a little nervous about this talk I guess." She started playing with the hem of her shirt. She was nervous about the talk we were about to have?
"Mom, you already gave me the talk years ago." I tried to lighten the mood. To be honest I was a cake away from peeing my pants.
She laughed nervously. And she was blushing.
I knew my mom. She didn't blush easily.
"Oh my God, Am I gonna need to have to talk with you?" She totally hooked up in Europe. I knew it! Ew. Okay. I should be more grossed out about this.
"Well I got you so the talk didn't really work now did it?" She deadpanned. My mom was back to being her normal self.
"Stop stalling and tell me everything! Well, not everything. I don't need details. At all. Please don't give me any details." Gwen had given me details about her weekend hook up. It was very... colorful.
"It's not like that. But I did meet someone. His name's Hugh and he's transferring to Harvard in a week but not in the same field as me. So we won't be colleagues or anything." She had a sparkle in her eyes. Clearly she liked this guy.
"Seriously, I don't care about the colleague thing. Tell me the important stuff. Is he hot? Wait. Hugh? Oh God he's British isn't he? That's definitely hot." I started ranting. This probably wasn't an appropriate mother-daughter conversation but screw it.
"He is from London and he's definitely attractive. Thankfully. The most people at the congress were old farts or very boring. Hugh stood out. We started talking and it clicked but I was being careful because he worked in England. And then he told me about his transfer so that was good to hear."
"When will I meet my new daddy?" I smiled. Of course I wouldn't call him dad. I loved my own dad too much and that Hugh guy would never replace him. Just like Beth could never replace my mom. That didn't mean I didn't like her.
Even though it's weird seeing my parents happy with other people I've always been supportive. As long as they don't bring home douchebags I'm not complaining.
"Well he's moving next week so maybe the week after? I don't want to rush anything. We're technically not even dating. So even your thing with Chase is more advanced than what I have with Hugh." Mom observed.
I told her about the date and just like everybody else, she was surprised.
"So you only made out with him?" I smirked.
"You made out with Chase?" Mom gasped. Crap. I forgot I hadn't mentioned that part. I told her about the coffee and about the date. Not what happened in between.
"Mom! Stay on topic! We were discussing Hugh Grant." She raised her eyebrow but decided to drop the subject.
"His last name isn't Grant unfortunately. Anyway, that's what I wanted to talk about. And I wanted to apologise." Now I was confused.
"Apologise? Did you already get married? Or are you pregnant?" I wasn't jumping to conclusions at all. My mom started laughing. Thank God. I mean, I was only joking but could you imagine if it were true.
"Of course not. I feel bad that I'm not here often." She hadn't expected it to be this busy after she got back so I guess she felt guilty about that.
"You could always buy my affection. I don't mind." I could use a new car or a trip to Rome or something like that.
"I'm being serious Jill" Obviously. She had been baking for God's sake.
"So am I. Look, I told you I understand. Your work is a big deal and it's really cool they gave you more funding." I tried to look as serious as I could. I told her so many times I didn't mind but somehow the guilt wouldn't go away.
"You're an amazing daughter. You got that from me, not your father." She smirked. I think I got her evil side too.
"Look at you, a hot mom with a succesful career and a hot British guy on your arm. I probably shouldn't call him hot, it's creepy, right?" I mean, wasn't he supposed to be a dad figure in my life?
"It's a little creepy but flattering so I'll tolerate it." I could see in her eyes this conversation meant a lot to her.
I snorted.
"Oh I forgot to ask you if your date is on Saturday 'cause I'll be home." Crap, my date was on Saturday.
Chase and I had been texting pretty much every day. Not just about the date, we'd talk about random things and about our days and stuff like that. Yesterday he had asked me if Saturday was okay and I replied it was. So I was going on my first date with Chase this Saturday. It still seemed weird.
"Yep it's Saturday. He's picking me up at seven." My mom started grinning at that. Creepy woman.
"Great! I don't think I've ever met him. He's picking you up? He's really giving you the proper dating experience huh?" Okay, I didn't like where this conversation was heading.
"I guess." I shrugged. Maybe if I stopped responding with full sentences, she'd get the hint.
"It means he likes you. He likes likes you. Jill, why are you feeling so uncomfortable? Oh you love him don't you. Sure you do. My little girl is growing up." She cooed. She was literally poking my cheeks.
That's bullying.
My mom was still laughing while I grabbed the plate with cookies and headed upstairs.
