Part 31

Flashback

Year 2010

Sai was heartbroken when Virat had said that they cant be together and she has to go away. She remembered their last night's conversation.

"But you said you love me...didnt you?" Sai had asked after listening to his decision.

Virat tried to explain his situation. "I... Sai...I mean..."

But Sai was so heartbroken that she didn't let me complete. "Were you just pretending? All your goodness...all those talks of being deeply, madly in love with me...were all those bullshit? And all you wanted was just sleep with me and now that you have got what you wanted, you are just sending me away."

Virat couldn't take the insult of his love like that. "How dare you to say something like this? Do you think like this about me, about my love. Didn't you feel me, sense me, how much I love you? Don't you know me? Phir aisa kaise keh sakti ho tum?" He was hurt by her accusations.

Sai too went out her frustration. "Toh phir kyu mujhe bhej rahe ho yaha se, kyu kar rahe ho khud se durr? Jawab do."

"Because I love you so much Sai, even more than myself, my own happiness. Yes, I didn't think about anything when I fell in love with you but now I realize that love is not for me. It was a mistake to act upon my heart's wishes. I should have never done that. I am a criminal after all. There is no guarantee of my life. My life is full of dangers. I cant destroy your life by accepting your love. What if I die in some gang war? Who will look after you?" Virat had tried to explain.

"You should have thought this before bringing me here, before loving me. I was living my miserable life but you came and gave me hope. You made me fall in love with you and now you are saying it was a mistake." Sai had accused him.

"Yes, you are right. But I was being selfish. I was only thinking about my happiness. Never thought about your future." Virat answered.

"And what future I'll have in that dance bar under the care of my uncle. He will sell me again to someone else." Sai cried.

"Don't worry about him. I have settled his account once and for all. Now he will not trouble you. And you are not going back to the dance bar. How can I sent you to that life back again?" Virat explained.

"Then where are you sending me?" Sai asked in confusion.

"Remember, you told me that day you wanted to study computers but that leech uncle of yours didn't let you study after school. Weren't you dancing in his bar to save money for your college fees?" Virat reminded her about her wish.

When Sai nodded her head, he continued explaining. "So I have arranged for your admission in this college in Pune. You will study there and stay in the hostel. Once you will complete this course, I am sure you will be able to find a decent job and become independent. You will never have to come back to those grime alleys of your old life. You will live a happy, normal life. After sometime, I am sure you will find someone else ...someone who doesn't belong to this crime world...who will take care of you...keep you happy. Give you a normal, peaceful life that you deserve." Virat completed. The thought of her living with someone else was killing him but he knew it was best for her.

Sai for once was flabbergasted by his selfless love. "Mujhse itna pyar karte ho toh kyu chhodkar ja rahe ho mujhe?" She cried.

"Sai, tumhe itna samjhaya na. Mera sath tumhare liye theek nahi hai." Virat repeated again.

"Sai! Jaan se ab Sai ho gayi main tumhare liye? Itna paraya kar diya mujhe ek pal mein? Iska matlab tum sach mein decision le chuke ho. Par meri bhi sun lo, sabkuch akele tum decide nahi kar sakte, samjhe." She shouted at him.

Virat looked down in guilt. He didn't realize she will be hurt if he called her by her name now but he couldn't say anything. She was right, he kinda decided on his own about everything but what he could do? He just wanted her to live a good life and he knew it was not possible with him.

He tried to explain again. "Jaan, suno...." but she didn't let him complete.

"Tum suno, Virat. Ab is sab ke liye bahut der ho chuki hai. I am deeply in love with you and now I cant foresee my life without you." Sai said in a desperate attempt to convince him.

Virat tunred around, averting his eyes from her. Sai continued her arguments.

"Whats the guarantee that anyone I chose will live for 100 years? There is no guarantee of life for anyone be it a gangster or a common man. Then why are you doing this? You know we cant live without each other." Sai pleaded.

"Try to understand, jaan, not only this issue but there will be other issues between us as well sooner or later." Virat replied.

"Like what?" Sai questioned him.

Virat reminded her. "That day before I left after Jagtap's call, I could read it in your eyes that you want me to come out of this crime world and lead a normal life which is not possible for me. I have come too far here and now there is no turning back."

Sai defended her stance. "Haan kaha tha maine wo sab. Aur shayad main hamesha yahi chahungi ki tum bhi ek normal life jiyo mere sath lekin agar tumhare liye possible nahi hai toh mujhe manjoor hai tumhari ye life. I'll understand. I promise, I'll compromise on this issue."

Virat ran his hand on his forehead in frustration. "What did you say? You will adjust, compromise....jaan samjho please. Ye sab kehna bahut aasan hai lekin ise jeena bahut mushkil. You know ye thoda sa waqt jo humne sath bitaya hai usme maine kabhi apne kaam ki parchhai hamare relationship par nahi padne di. Tumhe aajtak Bhawani kaku ki waadi tak mein nahi leke gaya main. Tumhe is sab se durr rakha, ek alag duniya banayi tumhare liye, us sab se durr. Tumhare sath hota tha toh main koi don Virat Chavan nahi balki sirf tumhara Virat bankar rehta tha. Lekin aakhir ye kab tak chal payega. Is tarah ki dohri zindagi main kab tak jee paunga?"

Sai was confused. "Dohri zindagi matlab?

Virat let out a deep sigh as he explained. "Apart from this loving Virat which you know there is one more aspect of my personality that is, the don Virat Chavan. He is part of me, my dark reality. I cant separate him from me. But you will not be able to bear his monstrosity, his darkness. You are an innocent angel, jaan. Forget about loving, you wont be able to look me like that." 

Sai was not ready to understand anything. She thought he was blowing it out of proportions. She knew he was a criminal and she has seen a lot of them in the dance bar. She had made her peace with this fact. She didn't think it will be that big deal in their relationship.

"I don't care, Virat. What you are, what you do. I just know that I love you....Don't push me away like this. In thode dino mein jo maine tumhare sath rehkar mehsus kiya hai...wo is duniya mein sabse special hai mere liye. Main bas itna janti hoon ki main phir kabhi kisi ke liye wo sab feel nahi kar paungi. Please, mujhe khud se durr mat karo." Sai wailed.

But Virat had already made up his mind about it. He didn't listen to her. Its been few days now. Since that day they have been arguing again and again. He was saying the same thing.

Somewhere Sai knew that he might be right but her heart was not letting her accept it. She was deprived of love all her life and now that she got it she didn't want to let it go for any reason.

Finally, after few more days, Virat came and informed Sai about her admission in the college and the hostel. He asked her to pack the bags, when she refused he himself packed her bags. Sai just kept crying silently. She thought he will melt down but looked like he had turned his heart into stone. He held her hand and almost shoved her into the car. He drove them to Pune.

Sai was continuously crying in the car. Her tears had not stopped even for once. Virat was sitting beside her, he tried to console her few times but she refused to even look at him in anger. The car stopped as it reached the destination. Sai and Virat came out. They have come to Pune, Institute of computers and technology. Virat completed all the formalities in the college while Sai just kept standing there like a statue.

Virat led her to her allotted room in the hostel and placed her bags. "Your fees and all the expenses have been paid and there is enough money in your bank account. Phir bhi, kuch bhi jarurat ho toh phone kar dena."

Sai looked at him angrily. "Nahi, rehne do, pehle hi bahut ehsaan kar diye tumne, Virat. Ab tumhara aur koi ehsaan nahi chahiye."

She hoped her anger would bring out some emotions in him and he would stop or at least try to understand her feelings but he turned to go out of the room.

Sai let go of her anger and held his hand. "Please, don't do this to us. Mujhe le chalo yaha se. I don't want to be away from you. I cant...I just cant...I love you." Sai pleaded.

Virat removed her hand. He had to go immediately. If he stayed there and looked in her eyes even once, he would not be able to leave her like this. He took a deep breath and left her alone to cry over their unfulfilled love .

Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months but neither Virat nor Sai was able to move on in life. Both were missing each other and wanted to nothing more than to close the distance between them but Virat had controlled by reminding himself again and again that he is doing everything for Sai's happiness and better future.

Sai, on the other hand was not willing to give up hope. Everyday without fail she called Virat in a hope to make him understand the depth of her love, to convince him to take her back from here. But Virat didn't listen to her. He had now even stopped taking up her calls. Sai was shattering down piece by piece, she was slowly slipping into depression and Virat was drowning himself in alcohol to forget her but nothing was helping them.

When one day her suffering become unbearable, Sai decided to confront Virat one last time. She had decided that either she will convince him or she will take her own life as she definitely cant go on like this. She ran away from the hostel.

Virat got the call about her from hostel when they couldn't find her and he panicked. He sent his men to Pune to search her while he himself started looking for her in Mumbai. He looked everywhere from her uncle's house, the dance bar, her friends house, their bunglow but he couldn't found her anywhere. His men informed that she was nowhere in Pune also.

Virat was worried sick for her. He was having all sorts of doubts and fears regarding her safety now. He was cursing himself to make her go through immense pain. Feeling tired and defeated he came to his home in the chawl. He wanted to cry his heart out here. He stood before the door and found it opened. He looked at it in confusion and pushed the door.

Virat entered there and found Sai sitting on a rocking chair there, eyes closed, listening to the songs on radio. He couldn't believe, he was searching for her everywhere and here she was. He thanked his stars that she was safe. Sai opened her eyes when she heard the sound of door opening. Both of them looked at each other and found the same yearning in them. Just then the song on the radio changed to convey the unsaid words between them.
