Part 18
Flashback
Year 2003
"What are you looking in the newspaper since half n hour?" Jagtap asked as he threw a stone in the sea.
"We murdered that gangster and injured that minister severely but there is no news of it in any newspaper." Virat replied.
"So what?" Jagtap asked as he threw another stone in the sea.
"I wanted to know who that gangster was? He was sitting in minister's party, he must be some big shot and we have killed him. We should know everything about him to protect ourselves." Virat explained.
"Protect?" Jagtap asked curiously.
"What do you think, his men will not take revenge from us? They must have already started looking for us." Virat concluded.
"What! They can harm us?" Jagtap said when the seriousness of the situation dawned upon him. Till now, it was just all cool for him but now he was scared for his safety.
"May be police covered up the news to protect minister's image but these underworld people will surely come after us so we should better be prepared." Virat elaborated further.
"Toh ab hum kya karenge, Viru?" Jagtap questioned.
"Tu chinta mat kar Jaggu, main hoon na tere sath. Hum koi na koi rasta nikal lenge." Virat assured him.
Virat checked his pocket. The money they got from selling those whiskey bottles and drugs which he picked up from minister's party was enough for few weeks of survival, to buy a locally made gun. Once this money is over they must soon think of a way to survive and earn livelihood. Also, they needed a roof over head.
Virat decided to go back to his chawl to take some of things from his house. There he hid himself when he saw some goons were standing at the door of his house. He entered from back gate of the chawl and called his Mukesh uncle, the same one who had helped him in killing Pakiya bhai.
"Virat, tum yaha? Tum he toh police le gayi thi na juvenile prison mein. Chhut gaye kya waha se? Aur yaha is tarah chhup kyu rahe ho? Koi naya kaand kiya kya tumne? Aur ye ladka kaun hai tumhare sath?" Mukesh inquired.
"Mukesh uncle, ye Jaggu hai, ye mujhe juvenile jail mein mila tha, mera achha dost ban gaya hai. Hum dono jail se bhag gaye the phir humne...." Virat started explaining everything to Mukesh, including the fact that they murdered some gangster in a minister's party.
"What! Toh tum logo ne usko maara?" Mukesh expressed his shock.
"Haan, hume majburan aisa karna pada. Lekin aap itne tension mein kyu dikh rahe hain? Aakhir kaun tha who gangster?" Virat questioned.
"He was Omkar aka Omi bhau's younger brother Dinkar." Mukesh informed him.
"Omi bhau, ye kaun hai?" Virat inquired.
"The drugs and alcohol mafia. Bahut bada aadmi hai. Bade bade logo se pehchaan hai. Wo apne bhai ke kaatilo ko kutte ki tarah sungh kar dhund nikalega. Tu aur tera ye sathi agar marna nahi chahte to ye shehar chhodkar bhaag jao." Mukesh advised.
"I will not run away. Mumbai kisi ke baap ka nahi hai jo hume chhodne par majbur karde. Aapse bas itni help chahiye ki aap wo jo gun lekar aaye the. Waise do gun aur chahiye." Virat said.
"Ok, but this time I'll need money." Mukesh replied.
"I have money. Lekin mujhe guns jaldi chahiye." Virat answered.
"Ok, this place is not safe for you. Go, I will inform you once I'll arrange the gun." Mukesh said and pushed him back from the back door.
Mukesh called him after two days. Jagtap and Virat went in the chawl. Virat looked at Mukesh. He looked nervous and scared. Before Virat could have understood anything, they were surrounded by 4 men. Virat looked at Mukesh in shock. He hung his head in guilt.
"I am sorry. Ye tumhe dhundte dhundte mujh tak pahuch gaye the. They threatened to kill my family. Mujhe in logo ko tum aur tumhare dost ki information deni padi." He informed.
"Its ok, aapne jo kiya wo apni family ke liye kiya." Virat said and nodded his head in understanding.
Virat took deep breath to calm down and be ready to face the situation. But Jagtap was hell scared, he started shivering with fear. Virat held his hand in assurance.
Omi was amused by the audacity of Virat. "I couldn't believe first when I was told that a mere teenager boy killed my brother but after seeing the fire in your eyes now I believe you would have done the deed. If it were any other circumstances, I would have surely recruited the talent like you in my gang. But you have to bear the consequences to kill my brother." Omi ordered his men to capture the boys.
But Virat was too fast for them. Virat gestured Jagtap and he understood. Both of them dodged the goons and ran away. Virat held Jagtap's hand and kept running through the narrow streets of area as he knew it from his childhood.
The goons scattered to find them. One goon found them but both Jagtap and Virat managed to snatch his gun and kill him. Then taking advantage of the situation, Virat and Jagtap trapped and killed all four men one by one. Omi called more of his men and started chasing both the boys. The boys were beginning to slow down as they were tired of excessive running.
Finally Omi caught them and pushed them to the ground. He pointed his gun at them while Virat took some dust in his hand ready to throw in Omi's eyes for counter attack. But Omi had to put down his gun when he heard a thick commanding voice of a lady.
"Don't even dare to use weapons in this area. This is my area. Ye bacche meri panaah mein hain is samay. Inhe maarne ki bhul mat karna nahi to tum yaha se zinda nahi ja paoge, Omi." Lady warned.
"You don't know akka sahib, they have killed my younger brother Dinkar." Omi protested.
"I know and I also know what your younger brother used to do with innocent little boys of juvenile prison. They killed him in self defense. In my eyes, its not a crime. So back off." Lady warned again and on her signal many women and children whom she considered as her extended family, started surrounding Omi. So he had to retreat having no other option.
"Thanks for helping us Aunty." Virat said.
"Mera naam Bhawani devi hai. Sab log mujhe yaha akka sahib kehkar bulate hain. Tum bachhe ho toh tum mujhe kaku bula sakte ho. Ye sab aunty wanty mujhe nahi jamta, samazla?" Bhawani said and placed her hand on Virat's head lovingly.
"Ho, samazla kaku." Virat answered.
Virat and Jagtap turned to go on their way when Bhawani stopped them. "Ae ladko, kaha chal diye?"
"Kaku aapne humari help ki iske liye thanks lekin hum nahi chahte aapko hamare karan koi problem ho isliye hum apne raste ja rahe hain." Virat explained.
Bhawani looked at him in amusement. "Bada himmatwala hai re tu. Maan na padega, kuch to baat hai tujhme. Pehle Omi ke bhai ko maara phir is tarah Omi ka samna kiya aur zara sa bhi darr teri aankhon mein nahi dikha. Ab ye jante hue bhi ki meri is wadi se bahar jaate hi Omi tujh par phir se hamla kar sakta hai, mujhe koi problem na ho isliye tu yaha se jaa raha hai. Waah! Dil jeet liya tune humara. Mere pati Nagesh kabhi yaha ke don hua karte the, unka alag hi rubab aur himmat thi, unke guzarne ke itne saal baad aaj wahi aag, wahi jazba teri aankhon mein dekh rahi hoon."
Virat liked this lady, he could see, she understands him. He didn't know what more to say to her, so he kept quiet and Bhawani spoke up after sometime as she had arrived at a decision.
"Mujhe nahi lagta tere pas aur koi thikana hai rehne ka. Toh kyu na tum dono yahi ruk jao, meri wadi mein. Waise bhi tu kitna hi himmatwala sahi par hai toh abhi bachha hi, main tere andar kuch banne ki aag dekh sakti hoon lekin uske liye tujhe guidance ki jarurat hogi. Mumbai ki nas nas se waqik hoon main, mujhse behtar sikhane wala tujhe yaha koi aur nahi milega." Bhawani shared her views.
Virat looked up at her and smiled. Not only Virat and Jagtap will get a roof over their head in Bhawani devi's waadi, a place which she has developed over the years and settled down many orphans and widows of mafias after their death, but will also have her guidance to fulfill his ambition. It was a win win situation for Virat, so he agreed.
After so many days Virat got something as close as family in Bhawani and Jagtap. Bhawani taught him all about the underworld, about every whos who of this city.
