Really Old Yogurt Grows Bad In Vanilla

Start from the beginning

Jake was waiting at my car when I was able to escape the busy hallways.

"Jilly! You look so pretty today." Jake shot me a huge grin.

"What do you want?" I deadpanned. Jake would compliment people for two reasons and since he wasn't hitting on me I was guessing he needed something.

"I need a huge favor. I was supposed to watch Emma today but something at work came up and I have to go."

Jake had the coolest job ever. He worked with a vet. He got the job a year ago because the vet was his mom's friend and she needed someone to take care of the animals. Sometimes she'd call Jake out of the blue telling him to get his butt over there because she needed to perform an operation and she needed extra help with pet care.

Awesome job, right?

I didn't really have a job. During the summer and sometimes during the weekends I'd be a secretary for my dad's law firm. Boring as fuck.

You'd think it'd be interesting because a lot of men work there. Unfortunately they're all old. Although last summer there was this intern and he was cute. We'd flirt every once in a while but I think dad scared him off. It was really funny though.

I did miss John. He was my dad's colleague and he always told me a lot of weird stories about his clients. Sometimes he'd come up to my desk and shout 'I lawyered the shit out of court today!' and then proceeded to tell me an exaggerated version of what went down.

John and the intern made it bearable working there.

"And you want me to watch Emma today?" I asked Jake.

"Please Jill. I'll owe you big time!" Jake seemed pretty desperate. I didn't mind though, Emma was a cool kid. She was nine years old and she had dark hair and eyes, just like her brother. She was gonna break a lot of hearts when she got older. She already got Jake wrapped around her little finger.

"No problem Jake, but you owe me a bike ride." I smiled when Jake engulfed me in a hug. The guy was very relieved.

"Okay, you need to pick her up from school and then drive to my place. I'll be back in a few hours, here's my key." Jake handed me his key urgently. He was talking quite fast so I figured he really needed to go.

"Wait, does Emma know I'm picking her up?" I hadn't seen the kid in a few months and I didn't feel like being accused of kidnapping.

"No, just wait with the other moms. Don't worry, she'll recognise you. She asks about you all the time. Anyway I really need to go. Thanks Jill, bye!" Jake was already heading the other direction before I could say something back.

I guess that left me no choice.

I quickly shot my mom a text so she'd know what I was doing and then I started driving towards the elementary school.

The kids were already leaving the building when I got there and I went over to the other moms. A few looked at me as if I was waiting for my own kid. Yeah, no thanks.

"Jilly! Is Jake here too?" I noticed the little girl immediately and was kinda relieved she had recognised me.

"Nope, it's just you and me for a few hours. Is that okay?" I took her little backpack in one hand and grabbed her hand.

I guess it was okay since she was jumping up and down. Aren't kids supposed to be tired after school? I know I was.

"How was school?" I asked Emma.

"Fun! We had math and we learned how to make birthday cards." Ah, I remembered when I said school was fun. It was a very long time ago.

"Really? That's so cool. Too bad my birthday was a few weeks ago." I pouted and opened my car door for her so she could hop in.
