Chapter 28

Steve would've jumped up and sliced Beta's head clean off if it weren't for the look Jay gave him. The look said: "stay down". Steve reluctantly obliged.

They were still hiding behind the chest, but Steve could slightly see Beta, Gamma, and Delta arguing in the middle of the room.

"Delta, go check on the prisoners," Beta commanded.

Delta hopped out the exit closest to Steve and Jay. "I swear this heat's gonna melt my slime off," he muttered unhappily.

"Gamma," Beta said. "Almighty Notch has contacted me. He says that Alpha has completed his mission. The Resistance is hiding in Creektown."

Jay gasped quietly. They knew about the Resistance? Alpha must've spied on them while he and Jay were away.

"Ah, yes," Gamma's silky voice replied. "Are we to bring our troops back to the overworld?"

"Tonight, yes," answered Beta's raspy voice. "But we still have some prisoners to execute. Come."

"GAH!" They heard Delta's slimy voice scream. "THIS IS WHY MAGMA CUBES LIVE DOWN HERE, AND NOT SLIMES!"

Beta and Gamma walked out the same exit Delta had gone through. When they were sure they were gone, Steve and Jay stood up.

"They know about the Resistance!" Jay exclaimed quietly. "We have to go warn them!" He started mining the block below him.

"Wait," Steve said. "Let's be rational about this. The Resistance isn't going to last very long against a full fledged attack from all the Mojang monsters. And we can't evacuate the entire town that quickly. The only thing we can do is stop the attack before it happens."

"How are we gonna do that?!" Jay asked. "There are a ton of them here!"

"I don't know yet, but if we can stop these monsters from leaving the Nether, they won't be able to attack us," Steve replied.

"They still have the Zombies," Jay pointed out.

"But we can most likely beat them," Steve retorted. "We can't beat them plus the Skeletons, Spiders, and Slimes."

Jay sighed. "Fine. But you better have a plan on how to stop them."

"We have the rest of the day," Steve said. "I'll think of something."

They hid behind the double chest again to think, not wanting to risk getting caught. A couple times, some Mojang monsters passed through, speaking in their monster language. Every time, Steve and Jay remained hidden.

How are we gonna stop them? Steve thought. They're an entire army, and there's only two of us...

Or was there?

"I have an idea!" Steve blurted out. Jay looked at him expectantly.

Steve whispered in Jay's ear. "Nice plan," Jay commented. "But how are we gonna get past these bridges?"

Steve hadn't thought of that. There was no way they could just sneak across the bridge.

Jay surprised Steve by opening the chest. "I think I just solved all our problems!" he said excitedly. Steve peered over his shoulder into the chest.

Invisibility potions. How had they been so lucky?

"This must be what they use to sneak up on the Nether monsters," Jay said.

"Makes sense," Steve said. "Let's take some, but not enough for them to notice there are some missing."

They took three each, one splash potion and two drinking ones. There were still plenty left in the chest.

"Cheers," Jay said, and they bumped glasses and drank one.

"C'mon," Steve whispered, and they started down the bridge Delta, Gamma, and Beta had gone down.

Steve had no doubts that if he had the chance, he would kill Beta. To get revenge for Porkchops.

Steve and Jay creeped down the open bridge as quietly as possible. They passed Mojang Slimes with ease, but the Skeletons and Spiders were a bit harder. Luckily, they passed all the monsters without getting caught.

They came to a 4-way intersection of the bridges. Straight ahead, the bridge tunneled through a wall of netherrack. It went too far to see what was on the other side. To the left was another building made of nether brick. Steve saw stairs leading up inside. To the right was another building, much like the one to the left, except there were no stairs.

But there was Beta.

He sat at a desk on some sort of tablet thing. He seemed to be typing something. And he was completely alone. No guards, no nothing.

Steve started walking that way, but he felt a hand on his shoulder. He could tell it was Jay.

"No," Jay whispered. "There are more important things to do."

Steve was about to whisper back when he saw two men coming from the tunnel ahead. They each held a baby Zombie Pigman, which were struggling wildly. But the men prevailed. They came to the intersection and turned down the left bridge, towards the building with the stairs. The prisoners must be that way.

Steve was torn. Save the monster prisoners, or avenge his pet's death?

Two giant Slimes were coming their way from behind them. Steve had to make a decision now, or they would be flattened and executed.

He ran to the right.

He heard Jay whisper "No!", but he didn't care. He was doing this for Porkchops.

Jay didn't follow him. Steve figured he had gone left. Well, he would catch up later. Right now, he had to do this.

Steve crept slowly to the room Beta was in. It must be his temporary office, because there was a chest in one corner, and a desk and table in the other. And that was it.

Steve silently entered the room, still invisible. He snuck up behind Beta, who was still typing away at his desk.

Steve got out his iron sword as quietly as possible. He happened to look at the tablet Beta was typing on. It looked like a report of some kind. It must be for Mojang.

Steve watched as Beta signed his name at the bottom. The report must be completed. Too bad it wouldn't be sent.

Steve raised his iron sword over his head, ready to strike, ready to kill. He noticed Beta turn the tablet off, and the screen turn black.

Suddenly, Steve's reflection appeared in the screen, holding the sword above his head.

The invisibility potion had worn off.

"Why hello, Steve," Beta's raspy voice said.

Wow, good job Steve.
