"So, you and Ricky are still together?" Cara asked casually. She and Izzy had been walking through the hallway for the past couple minutes, cycling through safe topics, but Izzy knew that the question was inevitable. News of EJ and Nini's breakup had spread through East High like wildfire and Izzy felt like all eyes were on her and Ricky now to see what their next move would be.
"Yeah, why wouldn't we be?" Izzy asked innocently and Cara simply shrugged.
"I don't know...maybe because your exes broke up and you might want EJ back," Cara said, the words tumbling out too fast to seem casual, and Izzy rolled her eyes.
"I'm not just going to ditch Ricky the second EJ is single. We're in a relationship and we're happy." She was lying right through her teeth of course, but she and Ricky had both agreed that breaking up right after EJ and Nini had would look suspicious. They were testing the waters to see if EJ and Nini were ready to get back into other relationships but had also decided not to be completely public with their relationship in case a last-minute breakup was in order.
And it was homecoming week, so a last-minute breakup could be in the cards if EJ agreed to be her date.
"I'm proud of you, Iz. You deserve better than that douchebag and Ricky is actually a really good guy," Cara said and Izzy nodded, ignoring the guilt swirling in her stomach.
There were only a few minutes until the next period started so Cara said goodbye before leaving for her class, but since Izzy had a free period she decided to spend it in the library. She stopped by the bathroom on her way there but froze in the doorway when she saw Nini clutching a dripping wet homecoming dress. The brunette seemed surprised to see her too, dropping the dress into the sink with a soft 'plop'.
"Oh, hi Izzy," Nini said, a nervous smile on her face.
"Hey," An awkward silence fell over the two girls. They had never spoken much before, despite being in the same class since kindergarten, but they definitely didn't speak after the past summer. "Is that your homecoming dress?" Izzy asked, desperate to break the silence.
