"But we're pretty sure it's going nowhere. The Camerons have to be paying those porkies off because they aren't doing shit. The gun's just gonna sit on a shelf somewhere to collect dust if not go straight in the trash." JJ shook his head in dismay, still so pissed off about the whole thing.
"So basically you guys are all out of options." Charlie sighed, placing his hands on his hips while he tried to come up with something to say. "Sorry you guys had to go through that."
Collins cracked a small smile, appreciating Charlie's sympathy. "Thanks. We really did try." And they were going to keep trying. They just needed something to unearth itself so that they had some kind of idea on what to do next.
"No more of this vigilante shit, though, okay? I know it fucking sucks that all this has happened but you guys are just kids. You shouldn't have to deal with this stuff." Charlie looked at both Collins and JJ as he spoke. "We know that John B is innocent but we can't control the Camerons or the cops. It's like fighting a losing battle. Maybe if John B was here he could plead his case, but..."
He trailed off mid-sentence; it was still hard for him to admit that John B was gone. The boy had been like a long-lost brother for as long as he had known him. His loss had affected him, too. That's why it was so important for him to protect Collins. If this was what it felt like to lose a friend, Charlie was almost sure that he would never recover if something were to happen to his sister.
Charlie wouldn't say it out loud or anything, but from a different perspective on the whole situation, it was kind of for the best that they'd hit a dead end. With no more leads to chase, they weren't going to be getting into trouble and get caught up in Ward's wrath. Charlie could handle Rafe, but Ward was a different 온라인카지노게임. He could only protect Collins so much and if they kept chasing after the Camerons, soon the target would be placed on their backs.
What Charlie didn't know was that they couldn't just stop trying. John B and Sarah were depending on them to find a way out of this. They couldn't come home until the threat against them was gone. But no one else knew that they were alive except the Pogues. Should they keep it that way?
Collins looked at JJ, and he could tell by the look on her face that she was considering telling Charlie the truth. It wasn't like he would go blabbing about it to the police or anyone else for that matter. No snitching, the unspoken rule around the cut. Charlie knew John B, too, and that was definitely the sort of thing that he would want to know. Collins didn't want to keep secrets from him again. It wasn't good for them as a family. But she wouldn't make any decision like that without someone else's permission. If Charlie were to even let it slip in a drunken haze that John B and Sarah were actually alive, that could put the two in serious danger.
Collins supposed that the fact that she could already imagine that kind of mistake happening, even if unintentional, she should take it as a sign against what she wanted to do deep down. It was a risk that they couldn't afford.
Looking down at her lap as she swallowed back the last urge she had to be honest with Charlie, Collins replaced her pensive expression with a small smile. "You're right, Charlie. What goes around comes around, anyways. Karma will get Ward and Rafe if nothing else does."
Charlie pressed his mouth into a tight line, agreeing with his sister. "That it will. Try not to stay up too late, alright?"
JJ flashed him a thumbs up just as Charlie was moving out of the doorway, while Collins replied back to him. "We won't. Goodnight, Charlie."
