"Kavita?"
Swara felt sudden dryness in her throat. She had never thought even in her wildest dreams that their past would stand in front of her one day like this.
No matter how much she denied, one thing she could never forget was that her husband was emotionally involved in other girl once upon a time.
Today, seeing their past's shadow over their present, the fear of losing his love suddenly crept into her mind.
Her eyes moved over the contents of the page, her hands started shaking.
It was Kavita's bail paper.
To her wonder her husband had signed as guarantor a few months back.
Tears started rolling over her cheeks.
'Has there been so much distance between me and him that he didn't even consider it necessary to tell me such a big thing?' Papers fell from her hands.
'Why Sanskar? What was the need to hide?'
'But you also hid joining hands with Ragini to reunite this family when he had asked you not to do it.' Her sub conscious spoke out.
'Why he had taken her out? He knew what she had done to us then?' Again her mind took charge of her sanity.
'Are they back together again?'
One thought crossed her mind, stopping her heartbeat for a moment.
Sanskar had gone against his entire family for the sake of Kavita. He left no stone unturned to destroy his own family. She was his love once upon a time. Insecurity started building up inside Swara's heart.
She came out of the dressing closet, her eyes fell on their marriage picture. Just a picture of them took her back in her memory line. Their moments, their bonding, their love gave some relief to her earlier tormented heart.
But her memory line also surfaced their pain and anguish during the separation period.
'Did our separation result in Sanskar finding his peace with Kavita?' Just a thought left her in a lifeless state for a moment.
'I love you Swara' from nowhere his voice rang in her ears bringing her back to reality.
"Sanskar only loves me. No one can take my place in Sanskar's life." She tightly closed her eyes to convince herself. She took a deep breath.
They had been playing a hiding game for a long time. Now, it was time for confessing and sharing her miseries with her soulmate.
Swara dialled Sanskar's number from her phone but except the ringtone she could not hear anything. Looking at the time, she realised her husband must be sleeping.
The detective instinct of Swara did not let her sit in one place in the wait for her answers. She went back to look at the papers carefully where she found out the lawyer Mr. Sagar Banerjee's name. He was the same lawyer who was fighting their case.
The next moment she was on call with Sagar asking for time to meet up. He gave her a late afternoon's appointment.
After lunch, Swara got ready and left for his office.
"Mrs. Maheshwari, please have a seat." Sagar welcomed her in his cabin.
"Thanks Mr. Sagar for giving me an appointment on urgent basis. I appreciate it."
"You are always welcome Mrs. Maheshwari. So tell me what can I do for you?" Sagar asked professionally.
"I wanted to know about the case. Where are we with it?" Swara asked carefully.
Sagar raised his eyebrows in confusion but replied professionally.
"For Ms. Kaveri, we were successful in establishing her part in Ms. Manasi's Murder." Sagar gave her an idea about Kaveri but Swara was restless as he did not mention anything about Kavita.
"And what about Kavita?" Swara could not suppress urgency in her tone.
"Mrs. Maheshwari, her condition is very bad. Yes, next month there will be a hearing for her bail extension but once we submit her reports I don't think the court will deny it." Sagar was under the impression that Swara had a clear picture about Kavita's bail.
"Reports? What kind of reports?"
"Her latest medical reports. The court will surely consider her last stage cancer state." Sagar disclosed swiping the floor beneath her feet.
"Kavita is suffering from cancer?" she mumbled trying to process his words.
"Yes and because of her this state Mr. Maheshwari asked me for her bail papers. In fact, I will need his NOC before submitting her upcoming bail extension." His words fell on deaf ears as Swara has turned torpid with recent revelations.
"Hospital? Which hospital is she admitted in?" she could barely ask for it.
Swara came out from Sagar's cabin after taking details. She was walking in her trance.
"Bhabhi are we going home?" The driver asked when Swara slipped in the backseat of the car.
"No. We are going to Credit Valley Hospital." Swara replied monotonously.
Swara herself did not know why she wanted to meet Kavita. Recent realisations had pushed her in a dilemma. Her mind and heart were fighting their own battle about Kavita but at the end her heart overpowered.
After taking directional details from hospital reception Swara took steps towards the cabin assigned to Kavita. She turned the knob, pushing the door she entered inside to see one sleek figure sitting on bed with closed eyes.
If the nurse had not told Swara that it was Kavita's room, she could not have recognised her.
Kavita was a beautiful girl but the one in front of her was the total opposite. With a bald head covered with minimal hairs, wrinkled spotted face, dark circles around eyes and a skeleton-like body, her deteriorating appearance earned shrieks from Swara.
Kavita opened her eyes to see one lady figure in front of her. It took a few moments for her to recognise Swara.
Swara could not take her eyes from Kavita's dreadful face. She was just gaping like a fish, but tears were rolling on her cheeks continuously looking at Kavita's condition.
There was a time when Swara had considered Kavita as a god gifted person when she gave up on her love. She was the one who persuaded Swara and Sanskar to accept their relationship by walking out of their life.
Both of them didn't realise how much time passed in silence.
A few moments later, Swara realize that Kavita was not looking at her but searching for someone else.
It was no wonder for Swara to judge whom Kavita was searching for besides her. Suddenly, her heart filled with apprehension.
"He hasn't come with me." Swara's hesitant voice earned Kavita's attention.
Her eyes stopped moving but stayed on Swara's face.
"I know he will never come. But what can I do, my heart keeps on waiting for him." Her voice was very low, if Swara was not attentive she could have missed it.
"You here?" Kavita asked.
Swara was looking for words to answer but could not find any.
"How are you?" Swara asked but next moment cursed herself.
"Do you really want to know how I am?" Kavita counter-backed, passing a humorous chuckle. "Still alive."
"Sorry." Swara regretted.
"Don't worry. He came here only once when jail authorities shifted me to this hospital from the government hospital. I don't know why he applied for my bail application." Kavita shook her head.
Swara took a step not moving her eyes from Kavita's face.
"Your husband admitted his ex-girlfriend to such a big hospital here. He got specialist for me. Arranged the best treatment. Sponsoring my medical expenses. Why? Have you come to find the answer to this mystery? Or did you think Sanskar is cheating on you with me?" Kavita's straightforward question stumbled Swara.
"What do you mean?" Her question angered Swara.
"Come on Swara, you have Sherlock Holmes' soul. It's no wonder to see you here when you would have got to know about me being out of jail and that too Sanskar is behind my bail out." Swara felt Kavita's pale eyes were trying to peep inside her soul.
"I just came to meet you as humanity. I came to meet that person whom I considered as my friend once upon a time. " Swara tried to sound sober. But Kavita's words had already left their impact.
"Take care." Swara turned to leave.
"You should trust Sanskar. He can never cheat on you Swara. He loves you more than anything in this world. And no one knows this better than me." Her words stopped Swara in her tracks.
She turned to see Kavita, tears were streaming over her cheeks for her unrequited love for Sanskar.
"These days, I always think if... if that day my mother had not goofed up and me and Sanskar would have got married then... then you would not have had a chance to be even near Sanskar. I would have been the happiest person on this earth being Sanskar's better half." Kavita's lips flustered with smile.
Swara gaped like a fish with just a mere thought.
"But what about Sanskar? Would he have been happy with me?" For a moment Swara felt Kavita was talking to herself.
"Maybe not." The hospital room beamed with the meek laughter of Kavita. "For sure no. I was never his happiness. I was always his close friend. Just a close friend."
"But for you he had almost destroyed his family business." Swara replied.
"That's how he is. He is over possessive when it comes to his relations. He can go to any extent for their happiness, their safety, their wellbeing."
There was deadly silence spread over the room for a few moments.
"I and Sanskar met at a common friend's place." Kavita's words again gained Swara's attention, she never had an opportunity to know details about their meet and relation.
"For me it was love at first sight but for him it was just a friendship which he thought of as love when I proposed to him. I always wanted to see love in his eyes, the same love that was in my eyes. And that day when you brought me back to Maheshwari house, I saw that love in his eyes but it was not for me." Kavita gulped heavily, "but for you."
"When I realised it I walked away for his happiness." She was submerged in their past.
"But you tried to snatch his happiness. You made him regret the time he spent with you." Swara wanted to know the rationale behind Kavita's past actions.
"I thought, over a period of time he will find his happiness in me since you were always busy with your family missions." Kavita accused.
"Sometimes Ragini and Laksh's failed marriage, or protecting Maheshwari's legacy or conspiracy queen Manasi Masi troubling your mother or sometimes your control freak grandmother filling your father's ears. Never ending family drama."
"You don't have to interfere in our family matters." Swara rebuked.
"What is a family to you, Swara?" Kavita asked.
"Is it just a bunch of people who live under the same roof? Or is it people with whom you share a bloodline?"
"For me family means utmost trust, care, love and respect shared among individuals who can fight with any adversities to secure this bond." Swara replied with determination.
"Now think carefully. Remember your life till today, recall all your relations, relive all your moments with every individual whom you call as family. Put them in your definition of family and tell me who is your real family?" Kavita tried to show her mirror.
"Sanskar" unaware of herself this time Swara's heart blurted out. "And..." But her heart could not find any further name.
"There you go, Swara. You have your answer." Kavita's reasoning left Swara speechless.
"I used to think you will always be busy with your family missions ignoring and taking Sanskar as granted. But you proved me wrong when you broke all the shackles to prove your love for him when I did not leave any choice for you."
Swara kept on listening to her without retaliating.
"Why does somebody need to push you till the edge to fight for your love? Love is something you should cherish. It is worth fighting for your love every moment of your life."
Kavita took a deep breath.
"You are lucky Swara, Sanskar loves you. If I would have been at your place, for me our love would have mattered me the most... the rest of the world gone to hell." Kavita's eyes turned determined.
Swara stared back at Kavita without a word. She wanted to say a lot of things but her voice could not find the exact words. Maybe for the first time her heart was agreeing to each and every word her mind has processed till now.
There was a knock on the door which broke the silence of the room. The nurse came inside with Kavita's medication.
"Bye Kavita. I will come next week." Swara smiled before taking leave.
Kavita's every word brought a whirlwind of emotions. She was trapped in a fix between her heart whispers and the upbringing she has received from her mother, the duties she had as daughter and daughter in law.
She slipped inside the car and instructed the driver to take her to Badi, to her Dida's home. In Sanskar's absence Dida was the only one who could understand her inner turmoil.
She stood in front of her Dida's picture which has a garland. Her dearest Dida had left her a few months back to reside in heaven.
She remembered her Dida's last days when she was upset and was on no talking terms with her beloved grand-daughter over the decision she had taken to support her sister.
"Shoru, one day everyone will move on with their life but you... you will be left alone if you won't reconcile with Sanskar. I know he loves you a lot, more than you can even imagine."
"Even after your blunders he will forgive you because he can't live without you, but don't test his patience."
"Don't strain your relationship so much that he will lose faith in your love. Even today his heart is filled with your love, do you want to replace it with insecurity and fear of losing you?"
"Don't ruin your blessed married life for others' mistakes. They will not look back even once when they get their desires."
Her dearest Dida's last words ranged in her ears. Her Dida had warned about the upcoming storm of her life but Swara had put blind fold on her eyes to oblige as best daughter, best sister, best daughter in law.
In the thirst to find happiness for her mythical relations, she lost her own way towards her soulmate, her own happiness, her abode.
"You were right, Dida. I am losing him. He is running away from me. What should I do now?" Swara slumped down on the floor crying bitterly for the chaos she herself created in her life.
'I can never run away from you Swara.' Sanskar's words before leaving for the US echoed bringing her life back. His mere words flourished the seed of hope to get back his love. She wiped her face with determination.
"Ohh Shona you have come? When?" Sharmishtha saw the doors of her mother's house open she immediately came to see intruder.
"Just half an hour back I came." Swara replied avoiding her mother hoping she would not see her swollen eyes.
"See I was telling Shekhar, my Shona will never forget her responsibilities. He was saying that now that you moved to your house you will not remember to get all essentials for Ayush like every month." Sharmishtha was busy in her own world to be aware of her daughter's current state of mind.
"Ma, I forgot to order but I will order now. You will get delivery tomorrow." She replied lifelessly.
"How could you forget Shona? You know Ayush's milk powder is almost finished. We get his medicines on a monthly basis... And you Baba."
"Ma, I said I will order." This time Swara could not suppress bitterness in her tone.
"What happened, Shona?" Sharmishtha was taken aback by her daughter's stand.
"Nothing." Swara shook her head and took steps towards the main door. "I am leaving. Bye."
