After Harry finished getting changed, Madam Pomfrey pulled back the curtains again and he climbed into bed. He looked longingly at the curtains around Dumbledore's bed, but then he looked away and was still shaking uncontrollably. Ginny held his hand and he looked into her eyes. He tried to stop shaking, but it was not possible. His strength was gone, but he was too tired to sleep. He knew they wanted to ask what happened, but they did not say anything. Madam Pomfrey came back to give him the Dreamless Potion.
"No, I don't want it," he said sternly, surprising all of them.
He did not want a peaceful sleep. He wanted to feel every stab of pain. He wanted to remember everything and save it for Voldemort. It was something none of them could understand, because underneath his pain and grief was a level of unsurpassed ecstasy. Voldemort was rejoicing in Harry's pain and he knew that Dumbledore was dead.
"Harry..." Hermione started.
"No," he said, not meeting any of their eyes.
"You're exhausted. You need sleep," Ginny ordered.
"I can sleep on my own," Harry said, with a sort of finality and leaning backward into his pillows. Madam Pomfrey set the potion down angrily, and stormed off, completely fed up with him.
"You can't do this to yourself, Harry. It's not your fau-" Ginny began.
"This isn't about that. If I sleep, I want to see him," Harry said determinately. None of them were happy to hear this news and tried arguing him, but he glanced over to Snape, who was watching him silently near doorway.
"No... I just want..." Harry tried to finish, but he fell asleep in the middle of his sentence.
Jabs of pain woke him up throughout the night, but he did not fully wake up. Voldemort gave him no satisfaction and did not make an appearance. It was nighttime before he woke up completely, when his back ached painfully. He sat up a little and looked around groggily at the poorly lit room. It took him a few seconds to realize his glasses were off. He groped around for them, but he ended up knocking them to the floor.
"I got them, Harry," Ginny said sleepily, picking up and handing him his glasses.
He put them on and focused. Ginny sat back in a chair next to his bed. He scanned the rest of the room and noticed that the curtains were open around Dumbledore's bed, but his body was gone.
"They took him out while you were sleeping," Ginny said quietly. "You mumbled a lot while you were sleeping and you were shaking most of the time."
Harry did not doubt that. He was still distinctly shaking. It felt as though none of his pain had gone away.
"W-Where is everyone?" he managed to say.
"It's almost eleven. They're back in Gryffindor Tower," she said, quietly.
"Why are you here?" he said, slightly confused.
"Professor McGonagall let me stay. She's been temporarily made headmistress," she paused, before she cautiously asked, "Did you see him?"
"No, he didn't come," Harry admitted, slightly angry about it.
"It's for the best," she said, wisely.
Harry said nothing, but agreed with her. He cannot let Voldemort get to him. He wanted revenge, but the pain brought him back to his senses. His long silence told Ginny that he did not want to talk about it anymore.
"You missed Malfoy," she said, indifferently.
"He came here?" Harry asked, amazed by Malfoy's boldness.
