[CHAPTER SIXTEEN] Alone...

Start from the beginning

He was surely happy now, just like what he promised me three months ago. And I… I was still fighting, trying to stand on my weak knees. It was really a good decision to leave him and fight this without him. There were just two things that could possibly happen if I did not run away from him: either I would cause him as much pain as my sickness brought to me or he would just leave me because of my situation. So it was better to do where everything would be easier for us: to leave in the easiest way possible, even though it would still hurt in the end.

“We’ve interviewed your members, Terrence and Heart, last week and they told us many funny things about you,” the host laughed. “So tell us some things about yourself before I reveal to you what they told me…”

            Maisen laughed. “That sounds scary.”

“It is. So, what’s your real name?”

“Mark Isen de la Fuente.” I smiled. I remembered how he shouted his name the second time we met. People started to gather around him, and I could not help but laugh at his craziness as I hid behind a tree. There I watched the fireworks. And he did too.

“That’s a beautiful name. Aside from music, what do you do? Are you studying?”

“I already graduated. I’m a professed pediatrician at our hospital now.”

“Wow! You have your own hospital?” The host could not believe.

“Yes,” he answered. “I am the son of the renowned brain surgeon Dr. Marco Arceo de la Fuente.” I tried to picture in my mind that awkward moment when I met Maisen at his Dad’s office. That was the most awkward event that happened in my life and what made it funnier was the fact that I did not know that it was Maisen who I was with at that awkward moment.

“Really? It shocks me because I met him when I went to Los Angeles last month at a conference. I never knew he is your father. You’re both handsome,” she laughed again with the audience. “Isn’t studying do be a professed doctor with specialization takes much time? So how long have you been studying?”

“I went to college when I was fourteen—”

“That’s a young age! How did that happen?”

“I was accelerated many times in elementary and high school. Then during my first four years in college, I used to take advanced subjects and I graduated within two and a half years. Then I continued my study when I was eighteen. I got my specialization, two years ago, then graduated just last March.”

Both Jane and I were surprised to hear that. I thought Maisen was just a cool-headed person, but he was totally not. I did not know what was in him that made him rush himself in studying.

“I don’t get it—” The audience laughed. The host was obviously surprised to hear it too. “Why do you seem like you’re in a rush to study? You even took advanced subjects? I mean… are you addicted to studying or are you just… what?”

“When I graduated in high school, my Mom was diagnosed to have brain tumor,” He paused for a while and there was nothing to hear but silence. “We all thought it was not cancerous, we scheduled her operation and all. But then we knew that it as cancerous, she was pregnant and her heart became weak. My Dad was trying things, experimenting everything so she and the baby would get well. But he can’t do anything. We decided to cut off the baby’s life to save my Mom at least, but she did not want to. So I rushed studying and absorbed everything I could to help him save my Mom and my supposed to be sister. But then she died. And the baby was inside her. It died too.”
