Angel.

The air was warm with sleep and sex, the kind of thick, lazy warmth that wrapped around you like a second skin after a satisfying round of sex.

I lay there on my side, staring at the ceiling and breathing in Mask's scent. The only sound in the quiet room was his steady breathing. He had drifted off not long after we both came undone, with his back pressed to my chest and my arm around his waist.

I reached down and tugged the blanket over him, watching as he shifted and let out a soft sigh. For a moment, I worried about him not getting enough sleep at home.

But before I could dwell on it, the ache in my shoulder reminded me that I wasn't exactly in great shape. I had overexerted it earlier.

Leave it to me to fuck a man to sleep with a healing bullet wound.

I chuckled dryly under my breath and slipped out of bed, padding into the bathroom with a limp in my step and my shoulder burning like hellfire.

The cold tiles sent a shock up my feet and I hissed as I stepped into the shower. Warm water cascaded over my skin as I pressed my head against the cool tiles and let out a long, shuddering breath.

What the fuck was I doing?

I should've been horrified. Mask had found the man who shot me and put him down like a rabid dog.

And what did I do? I got so turned on that I lost control. I fucked him like I needed to ruin him, like the pain and the danger were aphrodisiacs.

And somewhere deep down, I knew that should've terrified me but instead, it made me want more.

For a second, I thought about asking him how he knew who the shooter was, how he tracked him, and how he got to him before the Bureau could even confirm the guy's identity.

But I shut the thought down. I wasn't an agent anymore, at least not officially. I was benched and under review, and at this point, I was on thin fucking ice.

If I started digging now, it wouldn't do me any favors. But still, I was curious.

I turned off the water, dried off, and stepped back into the bedroom, rubbing my towel through my hair.

Mask had turned in his sleep and was now facing the side of the bed I always slept on—almost as if he was seeking me out.

A soft chuckle slipped past my lips as I walked toward the bed, watching him pout slightly in his sleep.

I ran my thumb gently over the curve of his bottom lip.

"You look cute when you're not being a pain in my ass," I murmured.

And it was true. Right now, he looked so human like this and nothing like the mystery man with the sharp voice and deadly hands, or the man who delivered severed fingers with cryptic messages. He was just a man who looked relaxed, with his mouth parted slightly in sleep.

I smiled and began to let down beside him when a phone rang. From the ringtone, I knew it was definitely not mine.

My eyes narrowed as I traced the sound to the pile of clothes on the floor. I glanced at him to make sure he was still asleep, then I bent to retrieve the phone.

The caller was Tomas.

That name jolted something in me and my brows furrowed as I stared at the screen, the call still ringing.

Wasn't that the name the owner of Ecstasy? I'm pretty sure it was. What the fuck?

Were they partners? Associates? Lovers?

The jealousy hit me fast before I could shut it down and even though I knew I had no right, it still twisted in my gut like broken glass.

Should I answer it?

The call ended before I could make a decision and I tried opening the phone, but it was locked. Placing the phone back, I walked to the bed, not sure how to feel.

I sat down slowly and my eyes landed on the balaclava on the upper half of his face. For a second, I hesitated, but something inside me said: Enough.

So I leaned forward and slowly pulled it off, which made Mask stir awake.

At first, he took in a deep breath and then his eyes cracked open, still heavy with sleep, as his lips curled up into a faint smile.

Maybe it was the expression on my face that warned him. But his smile died and then his eyes flickered to the mask in my hand. I saw his body tense immediately as his eyes widened as if I was holding a gun to his head.

He sat up in a rush, making the sheets slide down his torso as he scrambled out of bed.

"Wait—" I started.

But he was already gathering his clothes, while muttering under his breath.

I watched him with my heart racing. This was my chance.

"You're not going to tell me your name before leaving?" I asked calmly, eyes pinned to his face.

He froze for a moment, his shirt clutched in his hands.

"You look familiar," I said, quieter now. "It's almost like I've seen you before. So tell me, who are you?"

He didn't speak. I waited, but he didn't meet my eyes.

So I stood up, walked over, and just before he could reach the door, I stepped in front of it.

"I'm not going to chase you," I said. "But I don't want to play this mystery game anymore."

Silence stretched thick between us.

"So," I continued, voice low, "either you tell me your name or you leave. And don't come back until you're ready to give me that."

His jaw clenched and I saw his hands curled into fists, but he still didn't answer.

Disappointment crashed through me as I stepped aside.

"Don't ever try coming back. I mean it. I wouldn't hesitate to shoot you the next time I see you on my property," I said to him, hoping it would make him change his mind.

But he just stared at me with a blank expression. Like he didn't care what I did. Like he didn't even believe I would do that, and honestly, I didn't believe I could do that either.

Nevertheless, my gun is probably somewhere in Cyrus' office at the moment, gathering dust and I don't know when next I'll be able to hold it.

After a while, Mask just shook his head and walked out without a word. If I didn't know any better, I'd say he was disappointed in me.

The air suddenly cold and suffocating against my skin as I stood there in the silence.

And when I heard the sound of my front door closing, I wondered if his heart was breaking the same way mine was currently crumbling.
