Devin sighed, leaning back against the couch. "Well, I kind of think it's weird."
I tilted my head, waiting for him to elaborate.
"Zayn's my boy and all, but writing songs about my girl?" Devin shook his head. "I don't know. Kinda rubs me the wrong way."
I nodded slightly. I understood where he was coming from. But at the end of the day, that was Zayn's process. His way of expressing himself. And maybe it sounded like I was defending him, but after almost four years of whatever it was we had, I understood his art better than Devin did.
"I get that," I said, placing a hand on Devin's bouncing knee. "But that's what songwriters do. They write about their past experiences. And whether I like it or not, I am his past experience. It's inevitable."
Devin let out a breath, nodding slowly. "Yeah... okay. Guess I should be ready, then, because Zayn's dropping an album soon."
My eyes widened. That was a surprise.
Even though Zayn probably heavily disliked—hell, maybe even hated—me after how we ended things, I couldn't help but feel a tiny bit proud of him for pushing through and releasing an album. I knew how much his anxiety made it difficult for him.
"Oh! Well... that's great." I forced a smile, but even I could hear how unconvincing it sounded.
Devin laughed at my reaction. "Seems like you need to start preparing, too."
I rolled my eyes. "Come on, I'm a distant memory at this point. He's not gonna write anything else about me. Especially after he wrote that."
Devin gave me a knowing look, but he didn't argue.
