"Can our armour translate for us?" Nahuel asked, remembering that the suits were vastly complex lifeforms. They would often operate in intuitive ways.
"It disables the suit's defensive systems; takes too much out of the suit to do both." Tokala explained.
Nahuel considered it for a moment and decided to risk it. The suit shifted around his ear, making him want to gag for a moment until he adjusted to the sensation. THen he waited, letting the suit start learning the language before it could translate. By the time they reached their destination, he could get a running translation of what the humans were saying.
"Daniel, I bring news and guests." their guide announced to a man sitting behind an old, battered desk.
"Aeryn, how nice of you to report promptly. News first." the gentleman said, looking up at hte group. He had a friendly but tired face, gray dusted hair down to his shoulders and blue eyes heavily lined with fatigue.
"Genghis is dead. Ran afoul of the Great White. I salvaged what I could as is proper. Shortly afterwards, I came across these two. They faced off against a Finder and killed it." Aeryn, their human guide, explained. Despite being safely indoors, Aeryn was still rigidly alert and geared to be outside.
"What did you recover from Genghis?" Daniel asked, knowing that any resource recycled was valuble.
"Mask, boots, weapon and canteen. Part of his webbing is also salvageable. I brought it here as tithe." Aeryn explained, placing the gore soaked webbing down. Even damaged and dirty, it was the most valuble piece recovered.
"Accepted. What will it take to barter the other items back?" he asked, tallying the items in a large leatherbound book. The death of one of his runners was a check in the tools lost column.
"I plan on keeping the canteen, but blade, boots and mask I'll trade for safe passage of these two and medical attention for the big one." Aeryn negotiated dispassionately.
Nahuel passed the translation on to his mentor in a low voiced whisper. "Why is it helping us? Giving us credit for the kill, safe passage and medical help?" he asked the Pantharn.
"Notice how he didn't mention we crashed? We know he had to have seen the ship. Maybe he needs us as much as we need him." Tokala offered sagely.
Daniel and Aeryn silently watched the two aliens converse, then looked at each other. The leader was considering his young runner's suggestion of trade. It was a fair request and he was immediately suspicious as to why it was so reasonable. The runners were known to drive a hard bargain and be wild, yet the young man before him was being fair.
"You or your Uncle stick with these....things at all times. They get out of your sight, someone will likely shoot them without asking twice. Take them to Sampson to get them checked over. If they cause trouble, they're gone. If they don't follow the rules, they're gone. If I think they're doing anything I don't like, they're gone. Do you understand?" he demanded cooly.
"Yes sir, I do." Aeryn agreed, dropping the boots, dagger and gask mask beside the gorey webbing. Then turned to the aliens and gestured for them to follow along once more. Nahuel pondered both his Mentor's words and the conversation between humans. He could discern that Daniel was the man in charge while Aeryn appeared to be a younger man under Daniel's command. As much as Nahuel appreciated Aeryn's help, he was worried about what Aeryn wanted in return.
"Should we stay with him or go our own way?" Tokala asked his pupil, wanting to see the Panthari's instincts.
Nahuel's fangs slid out as he worried about the situation. His curiosity prodded him to stay, to try and figure out what the human wanted and his native culture pushed him to collect as much data as possible about the humans in general. But he also felt that staying would be inviting more trouble than they needed right now.
